Descriptive
Description Our catalogue covers both our physical (offline only) and our digital collections; collection lists can be browsed in full or keyword searched via Kei Muri Māpara, and are organised into the following four categories:
Auckland Lists
These lists describe the collections once housed in the Auckland Office of the Methodist Archives which closed in 2018; these collections are now held by the Christchurch Office.
Lists include parish holdings for Northland, Auckland, and Waikato regions; where duplicate listings of material are evident across separate lists, this is indicative of material that was rearranged when it arrived in Christchurch.
There are also lists covering the Audio Visual and Photographic holdings, and the Governance holdings of the Auckland offices of Methodist departments, divisions, funds, committees, and boards, transferred from Auckland to Christchurch.
Christchurch Lists
These lists describe the collections held by the Head Office of the Methodist Archives, in Christchurch.
Lists include parish holdings for Canterbury, Hawkes Bay, Nelson, Marlborough, and the West Coast, Otago and Southland (N.B. See Hocken Archives for further records), Taranaki, and Wellington. Parish baptism and marriage registers have been separated and housed together; these records appear on separate lists – including many (but not all) of the registers once lodged in the Auckland Office and transferred to Christchurch.
Some lists of Governance records from the national offices of Methodist departments, divisions, funds, committees, and boards, including records of Conference and Ecumenical holdings, are also available (where no sensitive or confidential information is included). Methodist Women’s Fellowship National Executive records are also listed here.
You will also find lists of our Architectural Plans, Photographs, Publications, and Manuscripts collections.
New Accessions
From 2023, with the introduction of a new archives team, new descriptive standards were introduced, alongside a refreshed listing template for our metadata. Lists of all holdings received and described from 2023 onwards will appear in this part of the catalogue.
Restricted Lists
Some of our collection lists are not available online as they contain sensitive personal information restricted under The Privacy Act 2020, or information still confidential to The Methodist Church of New Zealand. These lists are only available to Methodist Archives staff.
Research Enquiries
If you would like to make an appointment to visit us, or to make use of our remote research and copying service, or if you have any difficulty finding what you are looking for, please ask using our enquiry form.
