DescriptionThe nucleus of this collection dates back to the 1920s when Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt was the Connexional Secretary of the Methodist Church.

He actively sought what he called 'Historical Records' or 'Early Records' from parishes and individuals to preserve in the Connexional Office in Christchurch, in his role as Custodian of Early Records.

As documents ranging from newspaper cuttings, photographs, letters, registers, recollections, research, original manuscripts, diaries and so on arrived, he would carefully annotate each envelope 'Historical Records' and file the items.

Over the years, many of these documents were dispersed throughout the storage areas of the Connexional Office, but in 2006, they were brought back together, and along with subsequent donations of personal papers and manuscripts, catalogued as part of the Personal Papers and Historical Records Collection. The Personal Papers and Historical Records Collection also includes theses and essays.

Photographs were separated out at this time, and catalogued and stored as part of the Photographs Collection. This practice of separating accessions of material by item type was discontinued with the arrival of a new archives team in late 2022.

Digital versions of personal manuscripts and ephemera from the Personal Papers and Historical Records collection can be viewed in this collection, as well as manuscripts, ephemera, and photographs received from 2023 onwards; while digital versions of much of the very early material classified as 'Historical Records' (e.g. early NZ Wesleyan Missionary correspondence) can be viewed under National Archives.
