- The earthquake of 19 October badly damaged the old cob Mission House.
- To house the Resident Missionary, the school-building attached to the old house, is to be converted into a dwelling, costing about £120, plus a scullery to be added at the cost of £10 (materials for the latter possibly able to be salvaged from the old building).
- Trustees hope "that the request for aid may not in any way tend to break up the Mission in this Province ... as in this critical period of Maori history, such an event would be disastrous.”
- But if ever the Mission is abandoned, the Mission farm should have a tenant on the premises - thus the added necessity for a house.
