The Methodist Church of New Zealand Annual Minutes of Conference (1900 - present)
Descriptive
Description The Conference is the governing body of the Methodist Church of New Zealand/Te Hāhi Weteriana o Aotearoa. Meeting annually, Conference has vested in it, final authority on all matters of the Church. At the conclusion of each Conference, the reports tabled, minutes of discussions, and decisions reached, are compiled and published in an annual volume, 'The Minutes of Conference'.
The earliest volume of minutes was published in 1855, following the inaugural Conference held in Sydney of the incorporated Wesleyan Methodist Missions of Australia, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), New Zealand, the Friendly Islands (Tonga), and Fiji – known from 1854 as the Australasian Wesleyan Methodist Church. After formal separation from the Australasian Conference, and following unification with the Primitive Methodist Church of New Zealand, the inaugural Conference of The Methodist Church of New Zealand took place in Wellington in 1913.
The volumes record the changes happening within the Church on a yearly basis, and as such are an invaluable source of information about people and places, Church governance, finance, and administration, and the theological, political, social, and cultural evolution of the Methodist Church in Aotearoa.
